TREATMENT

Although there is no treatment that can stop, prevent, or reverse HSP, a variety of symptomatic relief based treatments are available that may be of benefit to people with the condition.

Treatment includes

-specialised physiotherapy (which may include functional electrical stimulation)

-medication to relieve spasticity and pain such as baclofen (intrathecally as well as orally to increase its efficiency and give a more localised effect with a lower dosage and fewer side effects) and tizanidine

-injections of botulinum toxin into the affected muscles

-if necessary, orthopaedic surgery to release muscle contractures.

A range of other treatments are also in the experimental phase and could be used routinely in the future.
